Hello I need help with making an mpeg1 DVD. So far Making what I want is realy no problem but the playback on the tv has a flicker like a monitor with a poor refresh rate. I made this disk already in mpeg2 at 720x480 with a bitrate of 1050 for vid. That allows me over 8 hrs on one disc but quality is boarderline even for an information vid. I have made vcd's before and figured the bitrate is very close so I am trying this all out but with mpeg1 but I get a flicker look or jagged edges when played on tv. I tried pulldown.exe like some threads instruct but just get a faster video, maybe because its mpeg1 and pulldown.exe I think is just for mpeg2. I tried mpeg2 at 352x240 but it doesnt play on the ps2 so I abandoned it.I also tried different field orders and also deinterlace but all I see is some are worse than others but all ways do it. Can someone please help with this flicker effect. Thank You - KJ

How are you doing your encoding? If you are working with the file you made, the damage may be irrepairable. What you describe is almost certainly an IVTC problem. Try deinterlacing during the encoding of the original material. If you are using Avisynth, you can include the decomb.dll to perform the IVTC.

I think I have exactly the same problem with my project. I have MPEG-1 video at 1400kbit/sec and 352x240 resolution. Looks just fine when I drag&drop the file into Windows Media Player, etc. When I put it on a DVD and play it using my Pioneer 434 on the TV, there's a LOT of flickering, especially around horizontal edges, and there are some obvious jaggies. This flickering persists when I pause a frame. I can take the same exact video stream and put it on a VCD, and it plays just fine in the Pioneer, no big jaggies or intense flickering. My theory is that some DVD players don't know how to handle 352x240 resolution material that's on a DVD, they assume that there should be another field in each frame. I think what's happening is that a blank field is being drawn right after the real frame, hence the intense flickering. I don't know if this is just an effect seen on some DVD players or all, haven't gotten out to Best Buy to do a comprehensive test yet.
