I have a 740 TD and I ahve an oil from a bout the middle of the head, It is just behind the vacuum pump. I have changed the casket on the oumo it it is still there. I think I read something about this before. The engine is running fine and this oil leak has been there for a while. the oil use is not over the top ie normal but I would like to try and fix this leak. Any help would be greatful All the best Andy

Its usually leaking from the head gasket at that point. This is due to when the head is re-torqued earlyer in its life, the person doing it is to lazy to remove the vacum pump to access head bolt under vacum pump push rod. This then causes a leak from the head at this point later in the cars life.

Well spotted mate! That is why they do not torque tighten at 1,000 miles after head replacement any more, particularly after the later hydraulic tappet models were introduced. I have the servicing directive on this. All the best, Peter

If that is the case what can I do about it? will the headcasket need changeing or can I re tighten the bolts? Looking at the service history there is nothing about the casket being changed. Thanks for your help so far

Peter I have just be changeing glow plug and found that the water bottle has a black sludge in it. I have check both the engine oil and the gearbox oil and none of them show signs of water on them. The engine is not overheating in fact the engine a long time to warm up. Is this just the cooling that need a flush or is this another signs the head casket has gone?
