I've been reading a lot of good things about these new processers from Sintefex They are using snapshot sampling to emulate all the very best vintage compressors and eq, and according to some top of the line mastering engineers, it really sounds like the real thing. Anyone here have any experience with these units? Anyone who knows if audioease is working on something like this for G4 macs, Maybe "Alticomp"?

I wrote the review of the FX2000 for Audiomedia and didn't want to send it back, so we bought it. You really should give it a listen if you're looking for a device that uses convolution to reproduce the process of vintage devices. It's the only Pultec emulation, software or hardware, that comes close to the ones I used to use twenty years ago. Their two new reps are excellent mastering engineers -- a rather innovative idea: having someone represent the equipment who actually KNOWS how to use the product.

Thanks for your reply. That sounds really interesting. Tell me is it possible to use both the eq section and the compressor section at the same time, or is it one or the other? What's the price for the FX2000? Thanks again.

I think Altiverb can already emulate EQ's..I'm not sure about compressors but I assume it would be able to. As far as I'm aware, the process of capturing an acoustic space is similar to capturing eq; throwing a testsweep through a space or device, sampling the result and processing it to fingerprint what happens to the testsweep. Mics, EQ's, spaces and possibly even compressors can be emulated like this with great detail and accuracy. Unfortunately the interface of Altiverb is geared towards reverb at the moment; if you'd want to capture a Pultec for instance, you'd have to sample each combination of all the knob settings! I presume the Sintefex's interface has been designed towards eq, and it probably does some nifty crossfading of convolution impulses to allow all the different variants/knob positions of the original (sampled) unit. Convolution has a wide area of application; I think the same technique is used in Antares Mic modeller for instance. Anyway, I suppose somebody with Altiverb, a Pultec and a lot of time on their hands could probably make some good sounding presets, but from an interface standpoint it would be pretty unuseable right now. Cheers, Joris

Not to mention the delay in altiverb is not a big problem with reverbs, but on eq's!!!
