After mixing my band's first single with Nuendo, I decided to mix the second one with a Pro Tools HD rig to see if the systems had any huge differences in sound. I admit that this would be more of a true comparison of the two systems if I mixed the same song out of each system, and I still may do that, but for now I got two songs, same genre of music, mixed with each rig, using same plugins and outboard (UAD compressors both VST and TDM). Each file is a 192kbps MP3 and the encoding is pretty good as far as MP3s go. Right click and "save target as" to download the files or if you have a fast connection, left click and stream them. the first is mixed out of the Pro Tools rig, its here: remixed last week out of the Nuendo Rig: so thats that. tell me what you hear, if anything. Steve

I used Lynx Converters to track everything. During mixing, I would use the Apogee DA 16 to output stuff to the outboard gear, and for PT it was the 192 i/o. Steve

I was listening closely to the choruses, and the PT mix seems to be a little harsher, but may be the mix. The Nuendo mix seems to have a tiny more dept. But I only hear these differences during the louder parts. The rest seems to be the same. But then again it's probably the differences in the mix(lets hope). Anyone else hears this? Joz

Blackline - thanks for the thoughtful post. This is one of the styles of music I like, and I think you did a great job with it. I hear a slightly clearer top end in the Pro Tools mix, and a slightly more congested lower midrange in the Nuendo mix, like someone else posted. I should really emphasize slight. The differences quite noticeable in my room, but it's not the kind of thing that would make or break a choice on the workstation used, and that's if it's even repeatable. I stand by what I said in another thread that Pro Tools HD and Nuendo strike me as equally relevant high-end workstations. Best regards, Jamie

I did this at my studio called Bang Recording Company. Use mostly Neve and API pres, Neve and API eqs, monitor on Truth Audio speakers, and use Nuendo and PT with Lynx Apogee A/Ds. A lot of people are digging the Nuendo mix but I think things sound a bit cleaner with the PT. At this point, I think neither one sounds bad. Our fans are loving it and at the end of the day, that becomes more important then PT vs Nuendo. My drummer who thinks all my obsessive sound comparing is idiotic said it best, "mixing in PT or Nuendo doesn't get you a record deal, good music does". I think what I've really learned is that you can make great sounding music with either one. Steve
