sorry about that. 'apply track fx to item'. default is stereo, mono is below that. if you have any fx on the track other than your instrument that you don't want applied, be sure and turn them off beforehand.

In version 3.02, I Apply Track FX to items as new take, and I get a new wav file with two horizontal lines in it but no sound. The midi track is just some sticks that click every first beat. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

I could be wrong but it sounds like you need to add an FX to the track that will receive the MIDI notes and convert them to audio. Or the FX there is not being triggered by the MIDI notes. To check the procedure, you could load ReaSynth from the FX browser and try that. It won't be the right sound though. Then remove ReaSynth from the track and load a suitable VSTi.

That must be it. I'll insert a synth and try that, thank you. (I'm using the Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth which isn't an FX. I wonder if there's a way to make the MS GS Synth work anyway?)
The Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth is outside Reaper, you would have been sending MIDI out from Reaper to this "hardware". In these circumstances the only thing that Reaper knows about is the MIDI - so when "Apply FX" is used you get an audio clip with no sound in it. Depending on your sound card / Windows sound mixer you might be able to route the MS Synth audio back into Reaper and record it - but there are likely to be quality and timing issues. So probably not worth it. Go get some freebie VSTis:
