Do I need to enable H264 in FFDshow?

I read in another thread that I should have it unchecked for Codecs in FFDshow. However I noticed when viewing some movies (mkv-264) that when it's unchecked I can see...blockiness. If I check it, everything is nice and smooth. So which is the right way? I usually encode every movie using HQ Slower at an average bit rate of 2500.

You should uncheck it only if you want to use another decoder such as CoreAVC.

...which is much faster than ffdshow.
