I haven't been using REAPER that much since November last year. (Only because I've been having a break from recording.) I can't honestly say which numbered version I was using then, but I always install the latest update. So, whatever version we were on last November, that's what I was using. Anyway, I can't remember any pre 3.31 version crashing on me, but with 3.31 I'm getting daily random crashes. The only thing that's different now to then is that I've switched to 32-bit Windows 7 from 64-bit Windows 7. I used 32-bit REAPER on both Windows versions. Apart from that, nothing else has changed since I registered REAPER in April 2009. I can't be specific about when the crashes happen as it seems totally random. For instance, today it crashed when I enabled record on a track. Yesterday it crashed when I muted a track. The latter resulting in a Windows 7 equivalent of the BSOD. Every day I'm getting these random crashes! PS: (edit) I forgot to mention that when I've had one of these apparent BSOD crashes, my PC doesn't shut down as normal. What I mean by that is, it takes about 5 minutes or so to shut down, by which time it actually restarts instead of shutting down. When I then get to my Desktop, there's a small message windows saying that Windows has recovered from a crash.
Thanks very much for reading my post and for replying so quickly. I just realised I forgot to mention shut down problems occurring after the BSOD crashes. I've edited my initial post by adding a PS at the end. Here is the text from the window that is on my Desktop after the PC restarts itself (instead of shutting down): Problem signature: Problem Event Name: BlueScreen OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.768.3 Locale ID: 2057 Additional information about the problem: BCCode: 9f BCP1: 00000003 BCP2: 86F9D298 BCP3: 82937AE0 BCP4: 87414AF0 OS Version: 6_1_7600 Service Pack: 0_0 Product: 768_1 Files that help describe the problem: C:\Windows\Minidump\030210-12760-01.dmp (I can't open this) C:\Users\Neil\AppData\Local\Temp\WER-1299940-0.sysdata.xml (and this one doesn't seem to exist!) And here is the information taken from Event Viewer relating to the crash: The program reaper.exe version 3.3.1.0 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the Action Center control panel. Process ID: e1c Start Time: 01caba377db4e63c Termination Time: 0 Application Path: C:\Program Files\REAPER\reaper.exe Report Id: 30b29cc9-262c-11df-8715-e0f8e8d01924 I did wonder about misbehaving plugins, but I'm only using the same plugins I've used ever since I first started with REAPER. The particular session I was working on when today's crash happened has instances of the following plugins: Major Tom, ReaEQ, Kjaerhus Classic Reverb, ReaFir, ReaDelay, ReaComp, Rocket, 1973 EQ, Waves RDeEsser, CMX, Kjaerhus Classic Delay, Kjaerhus Classic Master Limiter, JS Stereowidth. I can't understand what's happening; REAPER has always been the most stable program I've ever used. But, perhaps it's an issue with my system somewhere, and not REAPER. Particularly if no one else is experiencing the same problems. I'm off to bed soon. So, if anybody replies again within the next hour or so and I don't reply back, I'm not ignoring you - I'm just asleep (hopefully).
Blue screen crashes usually point to a driver problem, and the fact that this started only on W7 x64 points even more strongly to a driver problem. In the post that Steindork linked to there are instructions for how to prevent an automatic reboot after system crash, leaving the blue screen open for you to see what happened. If you can get to the blue screen, look for something ending in .sys, and google that.
blue screen, last night. my pc is currently being rebuilt by my it departmemnt. if they give me any details I will pass them along. This was first time my pc crashed and I don't have any plug-ins or such. I had just downloaded the trial version to demo.
Just an update for anyone that may be interested. Since changing the "IEEE 1394 Bus host controller" to "1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller (Legacy)" four days ago, I've not had any crashes. So, it's looking like that was causing my problems.
