I was browsing for a new computer online and looked at some workstations from HP. They have a new one with an Intel Itanium 733MHZ processor. This chip runs in 64 bits. Of course the first thing I thought of was how fast could this machine encode Xvid or Divx. Then I thought of Doom9.org. The only place I know where "someone" might actually have this processor and use it to encode. :) Very interested, Dali
AFAIK XviD and DivX (3.11,4,5) are not optimized for 64 Bit Instruction Set. Are they ? ;) So if you can't use the 64-Bit-capabilities you should know that 32-Bit Performance really sucks on Itaniums
Itanium is veryyyyyyyy expensive. No gain without special written software. And it should be not only 64 bit, but EPIC optimized (compiled). You can expect that it will be slower even from Celeron 700 MHz. And as I read somewhere Itanium is sold very bad - only 3500 pieces...

I'm not sure, but to run a CPU in 64 bit mode, wouldn't you need a 64 bit capable OS in the first place? And is there a 64 bit Windows XP available already?
