Are people plugging in their condenser mics like Neumann U87 directly into digi 001, or is their something tobe gained by going through a tube preamp? If so, which ones sound good?
IMHO the 002 pre amps sound pretty good to my ears at least. I have a neumann TLM103 which I use on vocals, and just about anything else I can. My wish-list includes a Great River me-1nv or UA M-610 ...but these aint cheap - so for now, my 002's preamps do me just fine

A nice mic like the U87 will give you a good sound to begin with, but putting it through a good preamp can do even more wonders. I use a rather inexpensive Rode NT2 and Avalon 737SP preamp and it sounds quite nice. My friend uses it with a Groove Tube preamp which sounds awesome as well. Recently I was considering upgrading my mic to a AT4060, but so far I can't justify the price jump when my vocal chain is already sounding so good.
The 001 preamps are considered to be of little more than fair quality at best. You should try a few out and you'll probably find yourself with a new pre in the near future.

The mic pe's on the 001 are not IMHO very good, but the bigger issue is the converters. Upgrading in both areas will yield a vast imporvement in quality.
