Perfectly normal, just the turbo spooling up.

The main problem here is "window down". The modern car with climate control is not meant to be driven with windows open! A loud radio also helps. I have edited this because upon reading it, it sounded flippant. I am trying to say that my S80 D5 2002 sounds crap with the window down, all sorts of wheezing and clicking noises, but I believe these are all normal.

As above, I can only hear the turbo spooling if my window is down at low speed.

I have had my V70 D5 2003 since new and now at 128k miles its definitely making more diesel type noises than earlier in its life clanks and rattles and all kinds of noises mixed in even the turbo wine sometimes , up to about 70k everything was quiet and peaceful , I will just live with it because once up to cruising speed on the motorway the noises go away .

In the meantime I have done another 8k miles , removed the turbo and alternator and put them back after finding no problems with them apart from a slight whine which still has not got worse , just ignore the noise , its the motoring equivalent of hypochondria , at 136k miles everything is now getting a bit slack compared to its youth but if I am realistic its probably not that bad and will still risk driving it to Milan without breakdown cover although if you do discover whats causing the noise then I will read with interest .
