Hi there, My V70 2.4 (170hp) 2WD from 2003 has started to encounter problems with the automatic transmission. When engaging 'Drive' the car first engages after 3-4 secs and this only with an abrupt klonk. In other words the transmission needs fixing. My questions is: should I order a brand new gear box or does it pay to have the gear box renovated by a specialist? Does anyone have experiences with this type of problem and can they recommend a solution? Is this a software problem, a torque converter problem or does the 'box simply need replacing? I am a bit dissappointed that the box is broken after 100K KMs but that's life I suppose. Any advice most welcome. Cheers Thomas
Hi, Thought I'd share my recent adventure with my '02 S60T5'. I contacted the dealership about 3 weeks ago concerning my transmission. The following details are what I stated to the service manager: When the car was decelerating - it would shudder into 2nd gear somewhat harshly. In other words, it was like when driving manual - you down shift from 3rd to 2nd and 'pop' the clutch. Side note: I brought my car to a trusted mechanic specialized in Volvo's. I initially asked him to change my transmission oil - as I felt it was due time and that, to my knowledge, it hadn't been done yet. The transmission fluid was dark - but didn't smell burnt. But when I mentioned the occasional problem I was experiencing the mechanic insisted I go to the dealer for service. I had mentioned that I had taken the extended warranty - 5yrs or 160000 km's. I'm now glad I did. Back to the dealership story: So the service manager at Volvo told me he'd have the car looked at. It took 5 working days - but he did finally call me to announce that the car needed a new transmission. I also mentioned about the inner tie rods - he would have those changed too. So that was about two weeks ago. The dealer did lend me an S40 for the time being. But it's taken a long time to get my S60 back! The last call was this morning - they couldn't take one of the tires off as my locking bolt had seized - that's funny - I just had the tires changed and the mechanic that did it used a torque wrench to ensure the right tightness. Any hoots - all this to say that the Volvo transmissions seem to be a little flaky. The car they lent me - the S40 - well that car too makes the same 'shudder' when down shifting into 2nd. Oh and - so does my wifes V40. Who new? Regards, Angelo
Update: My transmission was changed - so where my inner tie rods, and bushings all around. The gears do seem to change much smoother - but something funny happened today. I was slowing the car down gradually, and wouldn't you know it, the car lurched from 3rd to 2nd gear! Again, just like when driving manual, and you down gear - but pop the clutch and the car abruptly (through engine compression) slows down. This was the initial concern I brought to the service manager when I brought the car in. To note, I did find the same kind of behavior in my wife's V40, as well as, in the S40 courtesy car they lent me. My questions to the forum are: Have any of you experienced this behavior from your geartronic transmission? Could this be a symptom of my driving style? Could I be aggravating the situation with my driving style? Perhaps I pamper the drive excessively? Any help, or experience would be appreciated. Regards, Ange

i have recently baught an ex police volvo v70 T5 with 84k on the clock.its 2002. it has developed a few problems. when drive is selected it will simply rev up and not drop into gear. reverse is also intermittent. it will work in winter mode. i belive this skips first gear and limits power by 30%. all the other gears work without fault. apon cheaking the gearbox oil level it was a little high but the colour was red and it didnt smell burnt. this vehicle only did 4k in the force as it was the chief inspectors liason car. and as far as i no hasnt been used for towing as there is no towbar fitted or evidance of one being fitted previously. i have herd that within the tranny there is 2 cluches the first being used for reverse and first. And the rest controled by another cluch. does anyone have any idea what could cause this problem ? thanks will
