Hi, I'm a new member with a 740 2.0 GL and am in need of some help I found this bracket on the exhaust at the back of the engine compartment where it meets the body. It has sheered off and I think it is an exhaust bracket. Since we found it we keep thinking that the exhaust is blowing. Anyone know what it is???
It certainly looks like an exhaust bracket though I would expect the two prongs to be joined rather than open. And from what I can see, the bracket has broken off from the body rather than the exhuast which shouldn't cause the exhaust to blow. Can you give more detail on where this item was located on the car.
I would agree with 1stRaven, it looks as if it was attached to the body rather than the exhaust. It would appear that it is a hook(s) for rubber hanger mounts, but I do not recognise it as something I have seen on my 740. If it did come off your car there should be something matching it on your exhaust (or body). Perhaps it fell off another vehicle and bounced up under your car and lodged there.

It is the bracket that was on the downpipe , there are no brackets that are welded to the body , it was once attached to a plate that is bolted to the gearbox . Mister T.
I cant see where it would be now as the car is parked next to a puddle and I cant see far enough under without jacking the corner up. I might be able to borrow a jack at the weekend and have a look. Could I test to see if the exhaust is blowing by passing a sheet of paper under it and watching to see if it moves?
Hi Mister t is right the bracket is normally welded too the downpipe at the front and is then bolted to the gearbox.. Regards Paul
