There seem to be two schools of thought right now concerning new Mac purchases: 1. Buy now. On Jan. 1 all Macs will be OSX only, and you need to run 9.2. I know PT 6 is coming out very quickly, but I have an 002 which won't be ready for 6.0 for several months still. 2. Wait til after Macworld on Jan. 6. Prices should come down and there should be some newer, faster CPUs. But then there's that nagging OS issue. I guess my question is, if I wait til after the first of the year, will Macs *no longer* be able to run 9.2, or is it just a matter of installing it myself on a partition? How easy is this process? btw, I'm looking to buy a Powerbook. Those 1 gHz models seem very tempting (but backordered from what I understand).

New powerbooks just came out about a month ago - don't plan on there being new ones in January. Apple's product cycle is usually 9 - 12 months, and I would expect these powerbooks to be on the market for a while, as they are awesome machines. there's lots of good promos going on now too, so if I were you, I'd try and buy before the end of the year and all the promos run out. - Slim

According to Apple, as of 1/2003, all new macs will not longer support any os except OSX. You mill NOT be able to install yourelf, the machine will simply not run on OS9. If you plan on running Protools, buy now. Even with the impending release of PT6, IMHO it will be several months before there is a solid, reliable working version. If you are running a compercaial facility, I don't recommend making the switch until this forum preorts it's results. Hope this is helpful.
