Anyone using an Orange Micro SCSI card, the "ultra" version (not ultrawide) one with the 10mbs transfer rate? I know its not officially supported, but it is reasonably priced and I have heard good things about them... thinking about adding external IBM ultrastar ultra wide 9 gig someone offered me, and I'd need a card to drive it... recpmendations? reviews ? problems? thanks!

I have the the 930U, which I believe is a 20Mb/s card. Anyways, it's the Ultra. The only problem I have (G4/AGP/OS9) is that I can't have my Yamaha 4416 burner powered up when I boot. Once I'm booted, it works fine for burning CDRs. My sampler (also on the same SCSI chain) doesn't seem to have any "boot" problems, so I've been unable to figure out for sure if the problem is the SCSI card, or the CDR. If I remove the sampler from the SCSI bus, the problem persists and I've tried two different revs of the flash for the Orange Micro (1.25 and 1.15). However, if I remove the burner from the chain, I can boot fine, so the problem is PROBABLY with the CDR, but no guarantees. Anyways, other than that minor boot problem, I use it just about every day. YMMV. ------------------ LW

Thanks for the guidance. It at least gives me enough confidence to try it. That is the exact card that I was considering, cause it is only about $75, so... thanks again. I'll let you know!

An update: I just upgraded the firmware/flash to version 1.27 of my Orange Micro 930 SCSI card and it seems to have handled the "hang at boot" problem. It was running 1.25 before. Just make sure you get that flash upgrade done. I also upgraded Toast from 3.5.6 to 3.5.7 and now the whole system seems to work flawlessly. I can boot, burn CDRs, etc. with no problems discovered so far. This is the best my system has run. No problems with PTLE, 001, Waves, or SCSI. Knock on wood!!! ------------------ LW
