Heres what I,m doing: we have a line 6 flextone I am recording the XLR direct out of the stereo out on the back of the cabinet into 2 joemeek channel strips and into a stereo BBE then into digi and then I set a AT 4030 about a foot away in front of the cabinet to capture the amp and some room. I,ll admit I'm not that excited yet about the sound any other sugestions I want it to be a bit edgey and raw yet with a stereo field, full sounding. I guess I know it when I hear it maybe some other mic choices ???

The line outputs are as good as you'll get. Keep the JM and the AT4030, sell the BBE, and save up for a real amp.

Normally I would disagree in going out of a guitar amp's line level outs, it's just NOT the same as miking it. However with the particular Line6 amp you have....go out the outputs. Their speakers have a brittle sound to them, but the amp modeling section is very nice. The AT4033 isn't an ideal microphone for amp recording. But again with the amp you have, just go direct.... By the way, NEVER use the BBE Sonic Maxmizer for recording or mixdown... TOO much noise. If you do wish to enhance the bass harmonics, get the Waves MaxBass plugin....

If you are unhappy with the sound of the amp acoustically. definitely get something else. There are several small amps from Fender and other companies that have great sounds but do not require massive volume to get them. Personally I've never liked the sound fo the line 6 stuff, either the amps or the simulators. They all jsut sound like bad recreations IMHO. Get yourself a good amp that sounds good to you, put a Shure 57, sennheiser e609 or 421, or a nice LD condensor (AKG C4000B's are excellent) in front of it. Move the mic til you find a sweetspot for the sound you are going for. Throw the BBE in the trash. Definitely do NOT put it in the recording chain. The only things that should be in the recording chain are microphone, preamp and on some occasions a compressor set to ever so slightly compress. Less is more. Keep it simple. Hope this is helpful.
