Ok, I searched and found nothing that was really my problem, though I'm sure it is in here somewhere. This seems to me such a basic thing that there has to be an easy way to do this, I just haven't found it yet. Please point me in the right direction. I have recorded a piece of audio (or MIDI for that matter) that I have tweaked with various plugins to my liking. Still, the item contains stuff at the beginning and end that I want to get rid of so I can "loop source". How do I do that? Reapers non-destructive editing seems to get in the way for this (basic?) functionality... The posting closest to my problem that I could find is this, , but it deals specifically with MIDI items, and frankly I understood nothing of the reply.

-> resize the item so that you just see the stuff you wanna get looped -> rightclick the item -> item settings -> loop section of item done

Ah! That's it. I knew it was supposed to be simple... Thanks a heap.
