i suppose that makes them take envelope points rather than item envelope points.

Babag, not sure that I agree (or maybe it's that I misunderstood your reply). You can slip data inside the item, it's still 'the item' when you do this. Un-linking the envelope from the data seems reasonable in this situation. Moving the item would also move the envelope points I imagine.
