S40 1.6 yr 2000 I know this is another impossible vague knocking sound post but here goes... The car has a knocking noise when turning right on a bumpy road if travelling more than say 10mph. I initially thought it was the anti-roll bar bushes as the lower rubber inserts looked to be working themselves out. Having had these changed the noise is now less noticeable but it's still there - in fact I think it's now getting louder again. The car has been into 2 garages and neither can find anything loose. So any ideas what it could be? Could the suspension strut be vibrating internally? It must be something linked to the anti roll bar as changing the bushes seemed to tighten things up a bit and reduce noise. (I said it'll sound vague... ;-) ) - But any pointers or known issues with this model/yr would help. Cheers

Possibly front suspension top mounting, or possible cv joint?

I've got the same but when turning left. It comes from the front offside wheel. At the last service, the stealers checked the suspension and said the problem is a noisy strut. Apparently thay can get noisy with age. They said not to worry about it as it was still working OK. MOT coming up soon so we'll see if that proves to be correct. Its a 1999 V40 1.8

Had a noisy suspension on my wife's S40. Took it back to the dealer and they tracked it down to one of the bushes on the lower arm. As the bushes are not available as replacements they had to put new arms on. Worst possibility I suppose, but it just goes to show the multitude of possible causes.

i replaced the upper and lower cups and plastic bearing on my strut to stop the spring making a noise, does it sound like the spring not turning at the same rate as the steering?,i also (having cured this)have a knocking noise over bumps which is the offside top engine mount and happens regardless of steering.
